How do you get started in 3D graphics?
How do you get started in 3D graphics?
Maybe you've been wanting to change careers for a long time? Or are you an aspiring designer and want to explore 3d graphics in a design theme?
Let's see where the best place to start.
Computer graphics is done on a computer, which means the computer is your first assistant and main tool. Obviously, it must be suitable for doing 3d graphics - that is, quite powerful. But you can start and a relatively average computer, if you know the minimum parameters suitable for 3d graphics.
How to choose a suitable computer?
The first thing you need to choose a processor, this is the main "brain" in 3d graphics and the main calculations does, basically, it. You can start with i5, but it is better, of course, to pick up the processor i7 or i9. For example, core i5-9600.
Also you need to choose the RAM. It is good if it will be 32GB, but to start you can do with 14GB-16GB. Graphics card can be chosen from those that are suitable for the game, for example, GTX 1050Ti, but of course the better, the easier you will learn and then work in 3d graphics.
Hard drive better pick up 2TB. If there is no such a possibility - 1TB for storing information and system drive not less than 250Gb, better even if it will be SSD.
A common question - whether to take a laptop or desktop. The choice, of course, is yours, but it is worth remembering that the desktop for the same money will be more powerful and can always be improved.
There is a computer. So what software to install?
Everyone knows 3Ds Max, it's a handy program, but not the only one. Another popular program is Maya, Blender, Cinema 4D, Hodin. All of these programs also work with 3d graphics, and they can achieve good results, but each of the programs has its own specifics. 3D Max is often used to render interiors and architecture. Maya is used for characters and animation. Cinema 4D is loved by motion graphic designers who create videos.
There are also separate programs for sculpting, solid modeling and nurbs. In some programs, work similar to modeling with clay, and nerbs modeling is used mainly in jewelry production and the development of car concepts. Solid modeling is generally used to develop technical units.
If you're a beginner, want to make a cool job and just starting out on your journey, then you will be fine with 3Ds Max. There are a lot of tutorials on the internet for this program and a lot of scripts and plugins for easy work. The same goes for Maya.
In 3Ds Max you can do not only visually express the interiors and architecture, but also create 3d models for applications and games. You can also do characters, equipment and effects for animation and film.
So where do you start to learn 3d graphics?
First, choose what you are interested in and closer to - a single direction. Do not spread out all at once, start with, for example, the visualization of interiors. You will quickly realize how interesting it is for you, and where you need to go next. And push your boundaries! Try to become a universal specialist without losing, however, the quality of work in your main direction.
For example, it will be useful for you to study Photoshop, maybe After Effects if you are interested in animation. ZBrush and Substace Painter will be useful for Game Dev direction.
The best way to study 3D graphics is practice. First learn the interface, basic tools and general principles. And then imagine what you would like to do in the program and immediately start looking for information on how to do it. And when you have mastered the basics, continue to improve your skills and improve the quality of your work.
Computer graphics is developing rapidly, to become successful in this industry, you need to always be "on the wave".
The first step is to create a portfolio. It doesn't matter how many courses you've taken if you can't show the quality of your work. The important thing is to work hard. All customers need to know what you can do.
If you can do little so far, show your willingness to do a test assignment - it will be practice for you, and it will make the client trust you.
